
William S. Flinn passed away Feb. 17, 2018 leaving behind his beloved wife Marilyn, daughters Caryl Flinn (Gary Goertz) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Janet Rozman (Earl) of Ellington, Connecticut, sister Patricia Hamilton (Richard) of Verona, Pennsylvania, stepchildren Patrick Horan (Pam), Kerry McGuire (TJ), Thomas Horan (Kate), Michael Horan and Kess O’Halloran (Susan), niece Judith White (Kevin), nephew Stewart Hamilton (Christine), a grand-niece and nephews, and four step grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Alice and by his stepson David Horan. Bill was born in Pittsburgh, PA, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1945 and a Master of Science degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. He taught at Carnegie from 1948-1949. He worked on the development of gas turbines at the Elliot Co. in Jeanette, PA from 1945-1948. At Argonne National Laboratories in the Chicago area from 1950-1957 he worked on the design of the nuclear reactor for the first nuclear-powered submarine, the Nautilus. From 1957-1990 he worked at Combustion Engineering in Connecticut on the design of advanced nuclear power plants. He is the author of various papers and holder of patents on the design of advanced nuclear power plants. He was a member of Sigma Tau, an honorary engineering fraternity.
