Barry entered this world with his twin sister Bevereley. Having a twin sister meant Barry always had a playmate, friend and sidekick.
Growing up on a farm, Barry enjoyed cars and cattle, horses and hockey, baseball and Bob his dog.
Barry attended Blackstrap School with his mother Marvel as his teacher. He then moved on to school in Dundurn and Hanley.
Barry was a tease and an instigator and was always up for a good prank or joke. He had a bright smile that could be seen across the room.
He married the love of his life Connie in 1978, and that same year started a job at the U of S in Animal Science. His job provided him with knowledge and experience in cattle research which he applied to his cattle operation at the farm in Dundurn. Barry formed many wonderful friendships during the 36 years he worked at the U of S.
Barry spent countless nights attending to the births of calves. He took incredible care of each calf . On cold winter nights Barry carried each calf into the barn while being closely followed by its anxious mother. Barry warmed each pair before they returned outside in the snow. Barry was affectionately referred to as The Cattle Whisperer. His love for his cattle showed in way the animals responded to him, often following him around the farm.
In 2015 Barry’s world changed forever after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease. He resided at Lutheran Sunset Special Care Home for 6 years. Special thanks to the staff for the love and care they provided to Barry for all those years.
Special thanks to Dr. A. Johnson and the staff of St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the care and compassion shown at a difficult and painful time.
Barry leaves behind his wife Connie and their faithful four legged companion Mabel, as well as many beloved family members. We will miss his smile, laugh and his famous sweet tooth.
A private celebration of Barry’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barry’s memory may be made to Lutheran Sunset Special Care Home , TM Unit, Saskatoon.
Rest in peace Sweetheart, you deserve it.
