Bill grew up on the family farm, a few miles from Hazel Dell, Saskatchewan. He attended the Orangevale country school. At 16 years old, he travelled to Toronto, Ontario for his first job - making aluminum pots and pans. He later worked in the Uranium City and Lynn Lake mines. In 1962, he married Hope Peterson and they first lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In 1965, they moved to Hazel Dell, Saskatchewan and Bill ran the Hazel Dell garage. In 1971, the bulk station was added to the business and Bill delivered fuel to the local farmers. At the same time, he was a school bus driver. In the 1980’s, Bill brought a gravel truck and worked on road construction and later got on with the Pipeline (he was a Teamster) until he retired.
Bill was very involved in the community of Hazel Dell and helped build both the Hazel Dell curling rink and the Hazel Dell Hall. He also helped with the legendary Hazel Dell Husky Day.
Bill had many many interests and talents. He was a self-taught “fix it” guy – mechanics, plumbing, building. He hunted, fished, farmed, curled, baked and made sausage and jerkies. Bill was a skilled carpenter and made many gifts for family and friends – tables, rocking horses, cedar chests and birdhouses. He played the banjo and the harmonica; loved music (Charlie Pride was a favorite) and was a great dancer.
Pudgy, Tipey, Chubby and Fancy were Bill’s dogs that he taught many tricks. Playing cards and winning was one of Bill’s favorite pastimes; Kaiser, Saskatchewan Rummy, Crib; he was especially happy when he was way ahead and would sniff and say, “I smell something….!” If kids were around, Grandpa/Uncle Bill made sure there was lots of teasing, giggles and roughhousing. Bill often shared stories as well as what he had “read up on in the Maclean’s magazine”. Bill liked a good argument, especially about politics and especially with his brothers!
Bill always had time to spend with family and friends and would often say, Come, let’s have “a coffee”, “a bite to eat” or “a shot”. As well, he was always available to “give a guy a hand”.
When thinking about Bill, words like fun, always happy, laughing & joking, a good sense of humor, helpful, kind, generous, hardworking and enthusiastic come to mind.
Bill will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
