Blair passed away peacefully on April 23, 2013 at St. Paul’s Hospital at the age of 54 years. He was predeceased by his nephew, Dylan Nahorniak. Blair is survived by his parents, Al and Lois Hattie; sister, Colleen (Gino) Nahorniak, and their children Corinne (Tim) Bernes, Jasmine, Colton, Beth and her children Gaius and Camilo, Rochelle, Brooklyn, and Teralyn (Rod); brother, Brent (Debbie) and their children, Jason, Kevin and Lisa; sister, Linda (Rod) Karlenzig and their children, Broderick and Bryce; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Blair Hattie was born on August 5, 1958 at Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended Lorne Haselton Elementary School in Saskatoon, and continued on to Aden Bowman Collegiate for his High School education. Blair then attended the University of Saskatchewan to complete a program in computer science.
Blair worked at Al Hattie Insurance, drove taxi and was a Judo instructor while in Saskatoon. He spent a number of years in the Yukon where he ran his own business, and sold life insurance. While in Whitehorse he was in the computer business, selling, repairing and setting up computer networks throughout the area. Blair also spent some time researching wind power and hybrid lighting systems.
After moving to Vancouver, he drove a tour bus through western Canada and the United States. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with international tourists. He also drove school bus for many years.
Community was important to Blair, and he was a member of the Downtown Saskatoon Lions Club. He was involved with Cubs & Scouts, and YMCA family swims. He was also a member of St. Martins United Church.
Blair enjoyed the outdoors, beginning at a young age. He enjoyed holidays at Grandma and Granddad Boan’s farm in Saskatchewan, and holidays at Grandma and Grandpa Hattie’s in Burnaby, British Columbia. He travelled throughout the Yukon and British Columbia, including Vancouver Island, while he was living in those areas. He also travelled around the USA. Blair enjoyed camping at Palliser Park, swimming, boating and water-skiing. He enjoyed being active with sports, such as Judo, snow sledding, skating, and as a member of the Saskatoon Water Ski Club.
Blair had a passion and love for music. He played guitar, accordion, and was an avid drummer who played in many bands over the years.
Blair was an honest, kind and gentle man. He had a soft spot for dogs and cats. He maintained friendships with school friends, business associates, his family and acquaintances from the many places he went bus touring. His moral strength of character and good will to everyone will be sorely missed.
A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 1:00 P.M., with viewing and visitation services prior, from Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre (915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK 306-955-1600, www.acadiamckaguesfuneralcentre.com).
