We are saddened to announce the passing of Debi, aged 71, at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, after a brief illness. Debi is survived by her father Clarence, (Margaret), and one brother, Blair (Lori) Jordan and Emily; extended family Marlene (Werner) Suter, Andre (Trudy) Baggenstos, Annette (Les) Jones, and their families; and several Newman and Becker cousins.
Debi was predeceased by her life-partner Brian Baker in 2013, her mother Genevieve in 1991, grandparents Katherine and Alex Newman, and Annie and Max Becker, Arlene and Don Runge, Don Newman, George Becker, Erman Becker, Shirley & Bill Tabor, and Kathy McGuire.
Debi was born on December 19, 1953, in Saskatoon. Her father was a school teacher and her mother a homemaker, and they lived in various communities in Saskatchewan, where Debi and her brother attended school, including Regina, Cumberland House, Carry the Kettle, and Saskatoon. Debi attended Holy Cross High School and the University of Saskatchewan where she earned a Teaching Degree. She had a 42-year fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher. She taught in Buffalo Narrows, Inuvik, Sturgeon Lake, and Prince Albert. While teaching in Buffalo Narrows Debi met Brian, as well as many lifetime friends. Debi and Brian relocated to Prince Albert where they lived for several years, enjoying lively get-togethers in their home with friends and family, house concerts, regular trips to the family cabin at Emma Lake, playing the violin with "The Sistahs", gardening, and reading numerous books with a delicious cappuccino. After Brian's passing, Debi moved to Saskatoon. She continued her love of East Coast music, attending Celtic Colours in Cape Breton and participating annually in the Shivering Strings workshops in Saskatoon.
Debi loved her family and celebrated many beautiful holidays with all the family in Kelowna and Saskatoon.
Debi will be lovingly remembered for her joyful spirit and hearty laugh, and her optimism, courage, resilience, and generosity. She will be missed.
A sincere Thank You to the exceptional, compassionate care of the nursing staff and doctors at St. Paul's Hospital, 6th floor. We are very grateful.
A Celebration of Life for Debi will be held in Saskatoon, details to be announced at a later date.
