It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Betty, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, on Sunday, June 18, 2017. She left us, secure in the knowledge she was going to meet her God. Betty had a close and loving relationship with her family who were constantly by her side during her final days. Left to treasure her memory are her children: Deanne (Sheldon) Dowling, Ron (Shelly) Brewer, and Margot (Del) Kaczur; her beloved grandchildren: Spencer (Jill Duncombe) Dowling, Erika Dowling, Matthew and Madison Kaczur. Betty is also survived by her brothers, Orlin Erickson and Carl Erickson; sister, Bernice Hawkins; brother-in-law Frank Michalski; sisters-in-law Olga (Jim) Affleck and Fay Brewer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband Chuck; parents Minnie and Sven Erickson; sisters Roselie Erickson and Carolyn Michalski; in-laws Nelle and Sidney Brewer; brothers-in-law Lloyd Brewer, Albert Gray, Thomas Brewer (in infancy), Brent Hawkins and sister-in-law Dorothy Gray. Betty was born in Young, Saskatchewan on November 8. She spent a carefree and happy childhood with her friends and five younger siblings; she had a zest for life that was evident to all who knew her. Education was very important to Betty. She attended elementary school in Young, and graduated from grade 12 at Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute. Following high school graduation, she attended Normal School and became a qualified teacher at age 18. Betty taught in Stranraer, Biggar, and several schools in Saskatoon. Over the years, she continued her studies, and earned both Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts degrees at the University of Saskatchewan. Music was a constant throughout Betty’s life. She was an accomplished pianist and also played the organ, flute, ukulele and hand bells. She taught various music classes in both the school system and privately in her home, and was also a church choir director. Near and dear to Betty’s heart was her faith and involvement with her church, which was important to her throughout her life. During Betty’s retirement years, she enjoyed travelling, spending time with family and friends at her cottage at Emerald Lake, activities with the Sons of Norway, and volunteering at the Veterans Home, Folkfest and with the Western Development Museum. She shared her love of music by performing with many musical groups, most recently the Meri-Misfits. Spending time with her family and friends was most important to her, and she cherished the memories created during those times. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, or a charity of choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at Augustana Lutheran Church (1201 Broadway Avenue South), on Thursday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
