With great sadness and yet gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of George W. Edmonds on the afternoon of March 7th, 2024, just a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday. He passed peacefully at the Saskatoon Convalescent home surrounded by his family.
George was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan on April 24th, 1933, to parents Bessie (nee Mckay) and William Edmonds growing up on his parent’s farm at Major, Saskatchewan. After high school, he farmed with his brother Harold during the summer months and worked in the oilfield during the winters. He studied as a diesel automotive mechanic in the winters of 1955 and 1956 and in the spring of 1960, he purchased his uncle John Adams’ farm and began to farm full time.
On July 6th, 1957, he married Elsie Petersen (who passed in Dec of 1999). His son Michael was born on Dec 26, 1958, and daughter Cristel on May 30, 1960. He continued farming until retirement in the fall of 1999. In addition to the countless hours working the farm and helping many of his neighbors, as was the tradition among the farmers, he was involved in every aspect of his local community. He was a board member of the United Church, the Curling Rink Club, the Community Club, Sask. Wheat Pool, Credit Union and Co-op Store. He helped build the new skating rink and the town hall.
George was an avid curler, skipping teams in local bonspiels and in many of the surrounding towns. He played the guitar and harmonica and was known to entertain crowds long after the formal entertainment had gone home for the night. He also loved to dance. He and Elsie would travel to polka fests all over Saskatchewan.
George spent countless hours working with Elsie to create a truly beautiful farmyard full of flowers, fruit trees and well manicured lawns. The farm was a sought-after location for wedding photos every summer.
On August 24th of 2001, George married Evelyn Covell living on the farm for another 5 years. In 2006, they moved to Dalmeny, Sask. where they lived for 6 years maintaining their passion for gardening in their yard. In 2012, they moved into a condo in Saskatoon keeping up the gardening tradition with a community garden a few blocks away and a patio full of flowers and tomatoes. During the winters they traveled to Arizona spending time with family and friends. George and Evelyn made many good friends and enjoyed social events typically being the first ones to the twice weekly coffee and potluck suppers in their condo building.
George was predeceased by his first wife Elsie, his brothers Clayton, Henry and Harold and his sister Lenore. George is survived by his wife Evelyn and her daughter Arlette (Steve) and son Mark (Christie) and 3 grandchildren Alyssa, Jamie and Jay, his daughter Cristel and her children, Robert, Mark (Ariel), Derek (Lynne) and Sarah (Jon), 7 great grandchildren, and his son Michael.
The funeral and celebration of life will be held on Thursday March 14th at 1:00pm at the Mourning Glory – Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel, 915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon.
