George passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital the morning of Tuesday, February 08 at the age of 92 years. Our dad left us too soon. Dad was born to Carmel and Berthe (Renaud) Marquis on the family farm near Marcelin. He was the second youngest of 9 children, in a family of 5 girls and 4 boys. He married our mother, Lillian Jane Diehl on June 4, 1951. They were married for 66 years. Dad always said their marriage worked because they liked the same things. This was evident in their retirement years at the cottage at Big Shell Lake where they fished, hunted and baked bread together. There were always rides on the boat, quad and sled, and fishing year-round for his children and grandchildren. He was an expert fish filleter with the accuracy of a surgeon. He could build and repair whatever was needed at the cottage; each grandchild had a bird house with their name on it; seeing the birds and their grandchildren made our parents happy. Although dad’s formal education was limited because of the need for him to work on the family farm, he was a keen businessman who owned and operated a small hotel. He also had several trucking jobs and worked for the City of Saskatoon before retiring. He was a conscientious worker who expected the same from others. His humor was witty, observant and fun. Dad loved playing cribbage and he especially loved winning, which he nearly always did. Dad and Mom eventually lived at Elim Lodge and after Mom’s death Dad moved to St. Volodymyr Terrace, where he enjoyed visiting with friends. Dad is survived by: his children Lorraine (Michael Murphy), Len (Sherri Ness) and Carol; 7 grandchildren – Paige (Joby), Riley (Emily), Martin, Sarah (Terence), Dylan, Jared, and Maeve; 9 great grandchildren; his brother Philip; sisters-in-law Rose (Clair Boorse) and Ellen Claypool; William’s special friend Grace Kennedy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Diehl); parents Carmel and Berthe (Renaud); 5 sisters and their spouses – Florilda (Rene Proulx), Cecile (Fortunat Bertrand), Rose (Maurice Duchesne), Yvonne Marquis, Eva (George Renaud); 2 brothers and their spouses– Alfred (Frances Freer) and Andrew (Myrtle Diehl) and sister-in-law Doris
(Pevach); Parents-in- law Harry and Jane (Guillet) Diehl; Diehl Brothers-in-law William, Henry (Lea Verreault), Laurence (Florence Verreault), Alfred (Eva Button), Rene (Marquerite Robin), Raymond (Leona Willick), their sister Myrtle (Andrew Marquis), brother-in-law John Rawlyk, sister-in-law Theresa Grenier, as well as other extended family members. Our thanks to Dr. I. Dattani for his years caring for dad, the residents and staff of St. Volodymyr for their support and friendship and the kind friends and staff at Elim Lodge. We are grateful for the time we could have with our dad while he was hospitalized during this global pandemic, and for the efforts and perseverance of St. Paul’s staff in such difficult circumstances. Special thanks to Dr. Mark Fenske for his compassion and knowledge. A private family mass will be live streamed on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 10:30 from St. Volodymyr Chapel www.faithproductions.ca/livestream . Dad had beloved family members who were afflicted with dementia in their later years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550-12th Ave, Regina SK S4P 3X1. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected].
