It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of George Frederick Simpkins on September 9, 2014 in Saskatoon. George is survived by his loving wife Audrey, of 52 years, and children; Clinton (Gloria) Simpkins, Shelley Ann Tarling, Robert Simpkins, Jennifer (Corey) Lockie and Dixon Simpkins; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brothers, William (Linda) Simpkins, and Steven Simpkins; sister-in-law, Joanne; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Martha Simpkins, and by his brother, Timothy. George was born on October 11, 1939 in Rocky Mountain House, AB. He and his parents moved to Saskatoon to his grandparents’ market gardens just north of Saskatoon on Preston Ave. His was the third generation of Simpkins growing vegetables for the city of Saskatoon. In 1971, George and Audrey started their own market garden NE of Saskatoon. George, his father, and brothers were founding members of the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market and their families continue their proud commitment. Next to his wife and family, gardening was George’s passion. He will be greatly missed. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 1:00 PM from Acadia-McKague’s Funeral Centre (915 Acadia Dr., Saskatoon). Interment will take place in Bergheim Community Cemetery NE of Saskatoon. A luncheon and a celebration of George’s life will follow at the Bergheim Co-operative Rec. Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Bergheim Co-operative Recreation Centre (Box 88, Site 600, RR6, S7K 3J9).
