1972 - 2019
Gordon Anthony Engel, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Mar. 26, 2019, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Gord is survived by his wife, Raeleen (nee Dziadyk); his children Layne, Paige, Mary and Jonah; his parents, Ernest and Mary Engel; his siblings, Connie (Darrell) Scharback and their children Laneise, Alden and Derek; Cindy (Trent) Lowe and their children Tanner, Porter and Makenna; parents-in-law, Eugene and Regina Dziadyk, and a large extended family.
Gord was born in Saskatoon on August 25th, 1972 and grew up in the community of Allan, Saskatchewan. He graduated from Allan Composite School and went on to pursue his Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. It was during these years that he also worked at F. Mendel Holdings in Saskatoon where he met the boss’s daughter who later became his wife. Gord went on to work at Flexicoil in 1996 which later became known as CNH. He enjoyed his career there until his diagnosis, and loved the challenges the job brought him. During his tenure he was a creative inventor with over a dozen patents to his name. His work also gave him the opportunity to travel to many wonderful places around the globe.
Gord loved his family and always put them first. They were his pride and joy and he was always there to support them in many endeavours. He enjoyed the family time spent in 4-H, and many hours at the curling rink watching his daughters curl. He loved to watch Jonah play basketball and hear about his new found passion of track and field. Gord loved to go to the cabin at the lake in the summer and he spent many days fishing and telling stories around the campfire.
Gord was always community minded and gave generously of his time on many committees and through his membership in various organizations including the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists, the Prairieland Youth Leadership Program, the Saskatoon 4-H Beef Club, and the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation’s Close to Home Campaign. He also volunteered many hours coaching both youth soccer and curling.
Gord’s love of the farm kept him close to his roots. He always loved to return to Allan to visit with his sister’s family to pick their brains about the crops or spend time on the equipment. The daily workings of the farm were never far from his mind. He was always ready to chat with his niece and nephews in Meacham about their 4-H projects and life in the country. A witty story was always enjoyed.
Gord was a devoted son who felt that caring for his parents was time well spent. His willingness to help his mom and dad was unfailing. He loved to sample his mother’s cooking and listen to his dad’s favourite anecdotes.
The Vigil for Gord will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 29 at St. Philip Neri Parish (1902 Munroe Ave). The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 30 at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place) in Saskatoon.
