It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father and grandfather Iain Clair MacKinnon Rowan. He was predeceased by his wife Nolene Rowan in 2016. He was a beloved father to Kerri, Kevin and Neal. He was a kind and generous grandfather to Kaitlin, Alexa, Brooke, Alex Evan, Andrew, Luke, Thomas and Olivia.
Dad was born in Dodsland, Saskatchewan, on June 29, 1944. He lived and worked on the family farm in Plenty until he moved to Saskatoon for University and then to take a post as a Saskatoon City Police Officer. He and his beloved Nolene met in Saskatoon and married in February 1967. They moved to the 8th St house and began their family. Once Kevin came along, they moved to the Cairns home, where a great many years were spent and Neal completed the family.
Dad quit the police force wanting to lessen the stress of service for his family and became an insurance adjuster. First with the Cooperators and then after a brief stint with Telecable, he became an SGI adjuster.
Throughout his younger years, Dad remained a farmer, being the right-hand assistant for his father in Plenty. Many weekends and summers were spent over the years out on the farmland, working and enjoying the spaces. His love of Saskatchewan prairies has been passed on to his family.
Dad loved his Scottish heritage. He played bagpipes with the Saskatoon Police Pipes and Drums. Then, while raising a family, he took a hiatus but returned to play with the North Saskatchewan Regiment Pipes and Drums. He enjoyed the parades, Burns Nights and get togethers with his bandmates and his daughter when she could be there.
Dad’s focus was always his wife and family. He spent many hours driving to and fro, up and down, taking his children to lessons, parades, competitions and any and every other event that Dad duty called for. He was always on a mission and going to take Mom, Grandma, us kids or even later his grandkids to school or somewhere.
In 2016, Dad lost his beloved wife Nolene to a brief illness. From then on, he devoted his time to his children and grandchildren when they visited and when he could be involved in family get togethers. He loved going to the Colonial every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for many years. He would join the table group to quietly discuss world issues and solve all the world’s problems. He very much enjoyed the food and beverage. Lately these visits were reduced, but he always looked forward with anticipation to these moments spent with friends.
In January, Dad started having medical issues and through it all kept up the banter and a steady stream of memories of the loving times spent with family and friends.
Iain Rowan is survived by his brother Glen Rowan and Glen’s wife Carol Rowan. He is also survived by his sister Calla Rowan. He leaves behind his aforementioned children and grandchildren, as well as countless cousins, nephews and nieces.
Please consider a donation in Iain’s name to the Palliative Care wing at St. Paul’s hospital. The dedicated nurses and doctor’s made Dad’s last days peaceful and comfortable.
A Celebration of Iain’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Acadia McKague’s Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive) in Saskatoon, with a get together after the service.
