She was the oldest of five children who grew up in Neudorf until her parents sold their hotel and moved to Humboldt. Growing up the family spent lots of time camping and fishing. She was outgoing and made many friends that would hang out after school.
Irene moved to Hudson Bay shortly after finishing school and this is where she met the love of her life, Gerald Purcell. Irene married Gerald on September 23, 1977 and together raised one daughter, Raissa. They had just celebrated 45 years of marriage. Weekends were spent with friends going to Gerry's hockey games. Card games were also a family staple. Irene was a talented lady and made many crafts. She will be remembered for her years working at the Hudson Bay Medical Clinic. They lived in Hudson Bay until 1990 when Simpson Timber closed.
They moved for work and eventually settled in Pike Lake. This is where they started their outfitting business. Irene was right in her element, baking cooking and cleaning for many clients. She made it look easy and enjoyed meeting all the new people, some who kept coming back year after year. Winters were enjoyed travelling to warmer locations and going to hunting shows. Irene also spent many years volunteering with SCI and going to their trade shows.
Irene is survived by her loving husband Gerald, daughter Raissa, her mother Liz (Gus), brothers Kevin (Tracey) and Myron (Janet). She is also survived by brothers-in-law Murray Lux and Darin Smith, sisters-in-law Janet Becker and Tracey Becker and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by her father Bill, and sisters Elaine and Lorna. Irene will be remembered for her easy-going nature, fun-loving personality, and infectious smile.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all who have reached out with love and support during this difficult time. A special thank you to the staff at RUH and the Hospice at Glengarda. Irene had requested a small memorial service with close family and friends. To view the service please visit www.faithproductions.ca/livestream Arrangements entrusted to David Polzen.
