His early years were marked by hardship, growing up in the aftermath of the Depression, World War II, and the rise of communism. Jerry often shared vivid memories from that time—listening to doors rattle in the night as bombs fell nearby, watching his mother walk past a butcher’s shop unable to afford even a piece of sausage, and witnessing his family’s land being taken away by the government. Though bright and invited to attend higher schooling, political unrest prevented him from continuing his education.
After completing two years of mandatory military service, Jerry trained in cement construction. He later met and married the love of his life, Jana. Together they raised three children—Jerry, Tom, and Milena. Always working to provide, Jerry transitioned through various jobs, from operating farm machinery to becoming a chauffeur, traveling across communist Czechoslovakia and even to a few destinations abroad.
In 1980, Jerry and his family set out for what appeared to be a three-week camping holiday in the former Yugoslavia. At the end of that trip, instead of returning home, they crossed into Austria and applied for entry into Canada. After months of waiting, the family arrived in Saskatoon, where Jerry began work as a cable operator with Northern Telecom, a position he held until retirement. Tireless in his efforts, Jerry worked every overtime shift he could, determined to give his family the best possible life in their new country. His hard work paid off—he built a family home, purchased recreational vehicles, and took great joy in driving a new truck every few years.
Jerry’s lifelong love of the outdoors began in his youth and never left him. He cherished hunting trips with family and friends, and later spent many happy hours fishing, especially after buying a boat and a cabin at Little Bear Lake.
Family was always at the heart of Jerry’s life. He was deeply grateful to watch his grandchildren, Nikki and Liam, grow up, and felt especially blessed to welcome his great-grandchildren, Brate and Alden, into the world.
Jerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years Jana; his son Jerry and grandson Liam, his son Tom (Annette) and his daughter Milena (Rob), granddaughter Nikki (Drayke), and great-grandchildren Brate and Alden.
