O’DONNELL – John “Kevin”, devoted husband of the late Irene O’Donnell (nee Scharbach), passed away peacefully on Sunday August 31, 2014 at Vancouver General Hospital, age 89. Kevin was the loving father of Dr. Maureen O’Donnell of Vancouver and is also survived by brother Maurice (Barb) of Saskatoon; brother-in-law Henry Scharback (Margaret); sisters-in-law Marge Lohnes, Kay Maber, Leona Scharback, Mavis Scharbach; many nieces and nephews; cousins Larry Gehl and Jim Gehl; and his caregiver Myrose Ladera, who became part of his family. Kevin will be remembered by close friends Helen and Murray Erasmus and their sons, and Linda Mae and Larry Braun. He was predeceased by his parents Dudley and Mary Eleanor (Kickham) O’Donnell; his sister Alice (Barney) Smith and other brothers and sisters-in-law. Kevin was born and raised in Lanigan, Saskatchewan and lived most of his adult life in Saskatoon. He studied engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, interrupting his studies to serve overseas with the Saskatoon Light Infantry in WWII. His commitment to Canadian veterans was life-long, including his service on the Executive of Branch #362 Royal Canadian Legion. His 30 plus years with the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) in Saskatoon let him explore his interests in geology and the technical aspects of water well science. He valued formal education and life-long learning. Kevin was a true “gentle” man. He quietly and unassumingly supported both family and friends, offering sound wisdom only when asked. He cherished his wife and daughter and was always present for them. Reading a good book, relaxing to Vivaldi or Handel, working in the garden, listening to Saturday Afternoon at the Met or discussing politics were all enjoyed more with a piece of cheesecake or a brownie. Kevin loved spending time with extended family at home or on vacation. Family trips with Irene and Maureen contributed to the family tapestry. Kevin’s strong faith guided his daily life. He was an active parishioner at St. Francis Xavier Church in Saskatoon serving on the parish council and other ministries. In 2010, Kevin moved from Saskatoon to Vancouver and demonstrated his quiet strength in his new surroundings. His gentle, warm and loving manner impressed those who met him. A special recognition to Myrose Ladera, his primary caregiver in Vancouver. Her superb caregiving skills were accompanied by tenderness and concern for Kevin. In turn Kevin and Maureen embraced her as family. Special thanks to the caring staff at Columbus Residence, Kevin’s residence for 2 years and to the doctors, nurses and care aides on VGH ward 11A and the Palliative Care Unit. Donations can be made to Columbus Residence (704 West 69th Ave, Vancouver BC, V6P 2W3). The Vigil for Kevin will be held at 7:00pm on Sunday September 7th and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Monday September 8th with both services being held at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church (222 Willow Street, Saskatoon), with Rev. Father Nestor Gregoire, OMI and Rev. Father Emil April as con-celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
