Lawrence was born on October 13, 1942, in Midland, Ontario, to Olive and Nelson Edwards. In 1961, he proudly joined the Canadian Army, serving much of his time overseas in Germany, Denmark, and Holland. After his release in 1965, he returned to Ontario and, in 1967, married Donna Tinney in Vasey. Shortly afterward, they made Saskatchewan their home, where they built a life centered on family, hard work, and a deep commitment to community.
In 1974, Lawrence and Donna began farming with Donna’s parents. He took to the farming life with determination and heart—his strong work ethic and practical skills made him a natural fit. Even after selling his own land, Lawrence continued to help friends with farming and seed cleaning, always ready to lend a hand.
Lawrence was a man of many talents and interests. He had a knack for fixing just about anything and a love of fishing that brought him joy throughout his life. He worked at regional parks and resorts over the years, combining his skills with his appreciation for the outdoors. His greatest hobby, however, was woodworking. Many friends were lucky recipients of his handmade birdhouses—each one crafted with care and attention.
A committed community member, Lawrence gave generously of his time and energy to the Lions Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and Alcoholics Anonymous. Whether clearing snow, assisting with home projects, or offering quiet support to someone in need, Lawrence was always there.
After Donna’s passing, Lawrence found companionship and joy again with Sandra. Together they enjoyed travelling, camping, and many of the group activities they had once shared with Ed and Donna.
Lawrence was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna; his parents, Olive and Nelson; his brother, Neil Edwards; sister-in-law, Ann Edwards; father-in-law, Cliff Tinney; mother-in-law, Rowena Tinney Smith; and step father-in-law, Marshal Smith.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Joanne (Mike) Ubell; his son, Jeff (Erin) Edwards; and his cherished grandchildren: Hanna (Ty) Anderson, Austin (Hanna) Edwards, and Zach (Anna) Edwards. He also leaves behind his brother, Ralph Edwards; his sister, Delcie (John) Moriarty; sister-in-law, Ella Edwards; brother-in-law, Earl Tinney; and eight special nieces and nephews who fondly called him “Uncle Joe”; two of whom shared his birthday.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to his close friends, Warren and Roberta Gustafson and Kim Giles, as well as to the Elrose Legion members who visited him in the care home. Sincere gratitude also goes to the wonderful, compassionate care teams at The Palisades, Oliver Lodge, and St. Paul’s Hospital.
The last six years brought significant health challenges, and the final months were particularly hard. Lawrence faced them with strength. He is now at peace, reunited with Donna, and remembered with deep love and gratitude by all who knew him.
A private burial at the Elrose Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elrose Fire Department and Ambulance, the Elrose Brick School, or a charity of your choice.
Lawrence was a farmer, a fixer, and a friend. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and quiet generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
