Leslie Stack

December 2, 1933- March 9, 2021

Les was a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a papa, great grandpa, an uncle, a friend, and a farmer. Dad spent his life on the land at Eagle Creek; farming, ranching, and raising a family. He loved to sit on the top of the creek hill and look at the land, the park, and the water below. Les married Dolores Chortier on July 8, 1957. Our Dad had a lot of outstanding accomplishments, but the best thing he ever did was marry our Mom. Les leaves behind his wife Dolores, his three children Neil (Sandra), Sylvia (Daryl), Gale (Brad), his grandchildren: Shane, Riley (Robin), Jerame (Dar), Christopher (Erin), Megan (Justin), Harvest (Noel), Aspen (Logan), Evan (Tanner), Tessa (Mike), Pirmin (Karli), Lara (Nathan), Meagan (Ryan), Katie (Drew), Benson, Nadia and 13 great grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings: Marie Wheler, Robert Stack, Clinton Stack, one sister-in-law, Yvette Leveque, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Les was interested in everyone’s story from his old friends to people he had just met.

For a man who did not often travel far in the world, he had visions that made our world more beautiful. From Eagle Creek Park to the Orchestra Pit, from the house on the farm to the house in town – he worked his visions into everything he did even if no one believed in them… especially if no one believed in them.

When Dad wasn’t working the land, he was on the ice coaching or playing hockey, curling, on the baseball field, hunting, ice -fishing, golfing, volunteering, or driving around the park.

Born to a farming family in the Eagle Creek area, Les and his Dad farmed together, and later Dad farmed with his brother, Clinton. They spent endless hours seeding, planting, harvesting crops, and raising beef cattle. This is where he learned to love the land, and the pastures where his cattle spent their days. While he checked his cows in the pasture, he was always on the look out for the earliest blooms of crocuses and pussy willows, so he could make Mom her first bouquet of spring.

Excelling in baseball, he was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, twice. In 1994 he was inducted as a player and his team, the Asquith Braves, was inducted in 2007. When a hit was needed, Les was the one to call on. The Star Phoenix reported that he won or shared in six league titles; runs scored, runs batted in, stolen bases, and shared the lead in triples, home runs and hits. Dad was a good sport, but he really liked to win. The awards and recognitions continued throughout Dad’s baseball career.

His community involvement was second to none and he won many commemorative medals recognizing these contributions.  He completed a 17 year leadership role with the Environ 4H club, was part of the Asquith Elks since its inception in 1960, was a counsellor with the RM of Eagle Creek for 30 years, and spent countless hours working and planning for Eagle Creek Park. His vision for the Park was that anything was possible. He was instrumental in planning for the building of the golf course and stage, moving of the bridge, hall, and church, the infamous roof for gatherings, and of course, the Jamboree. The long running 30 year music festival remains and exists because of Les and Dolores, and his humble presence at his table by the booth will never be forgotten.

Mom would like to thank Father Emmanuel who brought Les the Holy Eucharist, and administered the sacrament of the sick for him on Sunday morning, two days before his passing. We know that his life’s journey was brought to a peaceful end and are forever thankful for that.  A special thank you for Dad’s caregivers Danae and Cindy. Les so looked forward to you coming each day to hear about your families, the wildlife you saw on your way to our home, and the laughs you gave him. . The smile you brought to his face each day with your kindness and humour will forever be appreciated. Thank you as well, to the Doctors and Nurses at RUH palliative care, who made our Dad comfortable in his final days, and to John at Mourning Glory for making our planning simple and respectful. Thank you to the many friends and relatives who made Les’ life so full, and so worth living.
