PAULINA ROSE HACKL (nee FOLK) passed away peacefully on Saturday June 15, 2024 at the age of 97 and will spend eternity with her husband and the love of her life, Robert John Hackl, who predeceased her on March 1, 2024.
Paulina “Polly” was born to Anton (Tony) and Isabelle Folk in Holdfast, Saskatchewan on August 27, 1926. The Folk family also lived in Regina and Kedleston, Saskatchewan and eventually moved to Middle Lake where Tony opened a grocery store. It was here that Polly & Robert had their first date which quickly blossomed into a 77 year long story of true love. They were married on October 8, 1947, and settled at the Hackl family farm where they raised 5 children. They suffered the loss of a beautiful baby girl, Baby Hackl, who passed away at birth in 1962.
Farming wasn’t easy but Polly & Robert worked together through the tough times and never missed an opportunity to gather and enjoy their family, friends and neighbors. Live band dances were the social highlights of the day and they attended many parties full of laughter, music, dancing and singing. Polly would proudly encourage Robert to belt out his rendition of “Blue Spanish Eyes” and “Delilah”, which he did beautifully. On occasion, Mom would perform by way of tap-dancing in front of her children but we never really found out when she developed her skills, nor to what degree. In 1964, Polly and Robert moved their family to Saskatoon. Never one to be idle, Polly dug in and got to work both literally (with employment) and socially (with a group of ladies regularly playing bridge as well as developing friendships with a large contingency of Moms and Dads of hockey kids). She and Robert’s sister, Margie, first found work cleaning newly constructed homes to prepare them for sale. Later, she worked at Extendicare, alongside her daughter Pat, both as Care Aides. Finally, she worked for the Drapery Shop in Saskatoon and became the Manager where she remained employed until retirement. Polly’s big heart, compassion for people, a non-stop goofy sense of humor, and a bigger than life personality endeared her to all her friends and co-workers.
Polly and Robert eventually began spending their summers at Emma Lake where they were members at the golf course for many years. Polly was eager to play golf and initially had to coax Robert to take it up, but once they got started there was no stopping either of them. They each recorded a “Hole in One” on the 4th hole of Emma Lake Golf Course. As their children can attest, they spent their lives doing everything together and in synchronicity. Polly’s heart overflowed with love for her children and their families, right down to the youngest great grandchild. On numerous family occasions she was heard to say, “Robert, look what we’ve created”.
Polly is survived by her five children: Elaine Martin, Sandra Boot (Bruce Stroud), Garth Hackl (Sheryl Dwernychuk), Pat Hutchinson (Terry), and Janice Waynert (Bruce), ten grandchildren: Sherry Labelle (Kevin), Tara Jennings (Guy), Michelle Pickard (Brent), Eric and Ethan Hackl, Kaelyn Hackl (Danny Salamanchuk), Carissa, Taylor, Dylan and Caebrie Waynert, and seven great grandchildren: Sydney and Andrew Labelle, Hannah and Matt Jennings, Brayden and Emma Pickard, and Owen Salamanchuk. Polly is also survived by two beloved brothers, Dan Folk (Toni) and Lloyd Folk of Kamloops, BC and many nieces and nephews.
Our family wishes to give enormous thanks to Dr. Wong and the staff at Samaritan Place in Saskatoon who not only cared for her, but each day showed their love and respect. A Celebration of the lives of Polly and Robert will be held at a later date. “See you in the funnies Mom!”
