JANUARY 17, 1922 – JANUARY 11, 2025
Goodbye, Mum. The world has lost a kind and gentle soul.
Peggy Parcell was born in Hertford England, the only daughter among 4 siblings. Gordon Wood became a neighbour in 1933, befriending Peggy’s brothers, Reg, Bill and Ken.
World War ll saw her working in a munitions factory and then becoming an Air Raid Warden in Guildford, close to London. Despite the dangers, some of Mum’s happiest memories were of the comaraderie of those years.
Peggy & Gordon married in Guildford in 1948 and their only child was born 4 years later. Gordon had been stationed in Canada during the war and immigration beckoned. So in 1956 Peggy sacrificed it all to begin a new life in Manitoba. Over the years New Brunswick and Saskatchewan followed as Gordon’s job moved them around. They later retired to Victoria BC, where the climate and scenery reminded Peggy of England.
Peggy returned to Saskatoon in 2006, a few years after Gordon’s passing. She lived independently until the age of 93. She spent the last 7 years of her life in the amazingly compassionate care of the staff and the Sisters of St. Joseph’s nursing home. Thank you.
Peggy’s family will always remember her for her sense of humour, her love of cats, (and animals of all kinds), her elephant collection, her Scrabble games, and into her 90’s, her absolute glee at beating her son-in-law at a game of pool or cards.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Lesley Avant, son-in-law Ron, granddaughter Morgan Klassen, Travis, Terry & Owen, grandson Graham Avant, Leanne Jaeb, Grace & John, as well as nieces and nephews overseas.
Mum did not want any kind of funeral but did ask one thing. She never stopped being homesick for England so, as promised, the ashes of Peggy & Gordon will be scattered on a hillside overlooking Guildford later this year.
