Professor Emeritus Ronald George Sutherland, 87, died on October 1, 2022 in Saskatoon. Ron moved from Scotland to Canada in 1967 to take a job at the University of Saskatchewan after earning a B.Sc. at Strathclyde University and a Ph.D. at St. Andrews University. Promoted to full Professor in 1974, he served on the faculty of the Chemistry Department for 35 years, teaching, mentoring graduate students, conducting research, and taking on a range of administrative positions including multiple terms as head of the Chemistry Department and a stint as an Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Science.
Ron was an organic chemist who spent much of his career engaged in international, multidisciplinary collaborations aimed at stopping the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons, and at more effective enforcement of international conventions against their use.
Ron was a talented cook, a skilled photographer, a keen reader and avid collector of all manner of books, and an adventurous traveler. He was happiest when he could combine work, family, and travel, exploring different cities around the world with his beloved wife Betty, or gathering the whole family for return visits to his favourite Scottish places.
He is survived and deeply missed by his wife of 62 years Betty, his son Ian, his daughter Kate, and his grandchildren Emily, Maggie, and Derek.
Ron requested there be no service. Arrangements entrusted to David Polzen.
