It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ronald Charles Walsh on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the age of 92 years. Ron was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Walsh, parents Charles and Mary Walsh, sister Dolores Gebert and brother-in-law Edward Gebert. He is survived by his children Doug Walsh (Janice White), Dean Walsh (Alana Krakowski), Darrin Walsh, and Christa Walsh (Michael Lipinski).
Ron was born and raised in Regina. He moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan and attained a science degree. He worked as a medical laboratory technologist at Royal University Hospital for 35 years, retiring in 1998. Ron loved his work, but he was also very passionate about sports and the outdoors.
He was a referee for amateur football and a track and field official for close to 45 years. In 1975, he helped found the Saskatchewan Amateur Football Officials Association. He was one of a few track and field officials in the province to qualify for international events, and worked at the World University Games in 1983, and the World Track and Field Championships in 2001.
Ron’s contributions to officiating earned him several honours, including being inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 in the Builder category. Ron was a hiking enthusiast, spending many summer vacations in the Canadian Rockies. He loved to tell stories of his hiking experiences and could recite the names of almost every mountain he ever climbed.
He could out hike people half his age - including his own children - and was doing so into his 80s. Ron’s gregarious nature was appreciated and loved by everyone who knew him. He had a kind and generous heart and enjoyed life to the full. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
