Sandra Grace (Meeks) Grassing passed away quietly on March 3, 2026 in Glengarda Hospice with Gerald, her husband of 51 years by her side. She passed a few weeks prior to what would have been her 72nd birthday.
Sandra’s soul is surrounded by family and loved ones on her journey. She is predeceased by her parents Elmer and Edie Meeks, her sister Diane Moore, her in-laws Paul and Violet Grassing and numerous brothers and sisters in law.
She is survived by her husband Gerald, nieces Katherine and Tracy and many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews in law.
Sandra was born in on March 21, 1954 to Elmer and Edie Meeks. She grew up on a farm near Arborfield, which, according to Gerald had roads made of the stickiest mud known to mankind. Her farm background gave her a love for animals, especially cats. Both her cats, Flanigan and Fibi were very pampered as they each lived to a ripe old age of 21 years!
She attended elementary and high school in Arborfield, where she enjoyed curling, being on the year book committee, and assisting in the library.
Sandra loved music and dance. She played the piano and in her youth often played the organ in church. She met the love of her life Gerald at a high school dance in Arborfield, where her favourite band “The Gates of Dawn” was playing. Dates in the 70s often led to attending “bush” parties, where friends and classmates used to meet up outdoors to party and dance. Music usually being supplied by someone’s 8-track car stereo. This led to confusion on Sandra’s mother’s part as she couldn’t quite figure out why Sandra’s shoes were always dirty after a date!!
After graduation, Sandra went to the Saskatoon Business College where she honed her administration skills. She resided at the YWCA and soon developed a friendship with three other girls who have remained her life long friends. Living at the Y caused a bit of a dilemma for Gerald as there was a curfew and sometimes one of Sandra’s friends had to distract the “guard” in order for Sandra to sneak in!
Sandra and Gerald were married on August 3, 1974 and set up residence in Saskatoon. Sandra first worked at Royal Insurance and later at Butler Buyers Insurance. This line of work afforded her with many memorable insurance claim cases before retiring at 60.
Sandra was a quiet soul and an avid reader and shopper. She loved to travel and had a passion for jewellery as she always brought back a jewelled souvenir from the holidays to Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Upon retirement, the couple spent winters in Yuma.
Sandra may have been a quiet observer of life; however, she had a fierce determination and strength in her that would be tested a few times in her life. One time being when her mother told her that she would give her a car if she got her drivers licence. At age 50, she accepted this challenge and through sheer perseverance Sandra successfully got her licence and the car!! The last challenge would be when she started her two year battle with lung cancer. She never complained as she went through the barrage of treatments with calm perseverance. Sadly this was one battle she couldn’t win.
With Gerald as her main caregiver and the help of homecare, medical and volunteer support she was able to remain in her beloved home until her last few weeks. She then went to Glengarda Hospice, whose incredible staff consistently went above and beyond to make sure her final days and weeks were comfortable.
A celebration of life come and go will be held from 2 to 5 pm on April 26, 2026 at 342 Candle Crescent, Saskatoon.
A family graveside service will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to make a contribution to Glengarda Hospice or to the Saskatoon SPCA, one of Sandra’s favourite charities.
