It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Symret Rezene Tekeste, who was called home on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 44. Born on April 7, 1980, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Symret was a son, brother, life partner, nephew, cousin, and friend who left an unforgettable mark on the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Symret was the beloved first son to Marion Mutala and the late Rezene Tekeste, the cherished eldest brother to Natasha (Robert Tuerke), Jacob-Joshua, Nehmia, Iyda, Segen (Kyler Flahr), and Fasil Tekeste, and the dear step-son to Tsige Berhe. He was a proud “double uncle” to his nephew and godson Oliver Rezene Tuerke and his niece Gabriella Rezene Flahr. Symret spent his life surrounded by a large and loving extended family. They all will miss him greatly.
He leaves behind his love and Life Partner of ten years, Shylah Nokusis. They built a beautiful life full of adventure, joy, and laughter together in Neudorf, SK. They shared a dog named Moso, whom Symret treasured. He was a much-loved family member, uncle, and friend to Shylah’s extended family. In his death, he was given the Spirit Name Muskwa Napew (Bear Man).
He is preceded in death by his father, Rezene Tekeste; his maternal grandparents August and Sophie Mutala; his paternal grandparents Tekeste Geberemdhin and Gabriella Segayi and many aunts and uncles who loved him dearly.
Symret took great pride in his identity as a ticketed Journeyman Carpenter; he was a member of the UBC Local 1985 Union. He was a brilliant artist and craftsman in his trade. He was passionate about his work, and throughout his career he obtained three Red Seals in Carpentry, Cabinet Making, and Scaffolding - which his family lovingly referred to as a “triple threat” as this was a rare accomplishment in his field.
As a skilled and experienced carpenter, Symret built many homes throughout Saskatchewan, but to his loved ones he built a foundation of love and support. He was always ready to help his loved ones with their many home projects. His hands were strong and capable; hands that were always extended in service to others. He was a caretaker to his family and loved ones; he carried their burdens without hesitation and ensured they felt safe and supported in his presence.
Beyond his work, Symret lived a joy-filled life of connection and adventure. He loved being outdoors, whether it was time spent working, ice fishing, hunting, or golfing. He loved sports, especially football and was a life-long Roughriders and Raiders fan. He cherished time with his extended family where he would often be found mini-golfing, bowling, go-karting, playing monopoly, or watching movie marathons with them.
Symret could brighten any room with his quick wit and playful humour; he had an infectious laugh that lifted even the heaviest hearts. His loved ones will always cherish his vulnerability and love towards them. In times of hardship, he demonstrated bravery, courage, and perseverance and was an anchor of resilience and hope for those who needed him.
His absence leaves behind an immense void that cannot be filled, but we take comfort in knowing he is now in God’s eternal embrace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before him. As we grieve, we also celebrate the life he lived—a life of love, strength, kindness, and selflessness.
We ask for your continued prayers for Symret and our family during this time of enormous grief and sorrow.
A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial to honour Symret’s life will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:30 AM at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Place in Saskatoon, SK). The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 AM. Following Mass, a lunch will take place in Holy Spirit Church Hall. At 2:00 PM, family and friends will depart for St. Andrew’s Parish Cemetery in Kenaston, SK where Symret will be laid to rest.
