March 24, 1926 - December 18, 2017
Mom was so huge in our lives we could never imagine life without her. But December 18, 2017 surrounded by many loved ones our dearest Mom, Gram, Gam, Auntie closed her eyes for a long deserved rest. Born and raised on the family farm in the R.M. Lost River Velva was the 3rd daughter born to G.M. (Mike) Booker and Amanda Booker (Skaros). At the tender age of 4 Velva and sister Irene began working on the farm hauling water and feed for the mixed farm livestock. And from that age til her passing she worked tirelessly never indulging in the luxury of idle hands. Velva left home at 16 to work in the telephone office in Dundurn. Although she never achieved her goal of becoming a professional teacher the life long lessons she imparted to those surrounding her shall never be forgotten. She married F. Bruce Summerfeldt in 1947 and in Dundurn they raised their family. Surviving Linda (Bill) Hunt and Scott (Jan) Summerfeldt, her most joyous gift of life devoted granddaughter Bethany (Landen) Bold and the most precious joys of her life g-grands Lilith-Pearl (Lily) and Evelyn (Evie) Bold. As her children matured she joined Dad as they embarked on operating the Dundurn Red & White Store. Shortly after retiring Mom became a devoted care giver whose healing hands supported Dad through his many years of ill health. Following Dad’s illness they moved to their home in Saskatoon before enjoying their final years in Chalet Gardens. Mom touched the hands of Royalty but her greatest remembrance is of a caring, selfless person who without a doubt was one of the best cooks, specializing in buns, pies, tarts, cakes and cupcakes that everyone looked forward to indulging. Sunday dinner feasts with her family was a custom that Velva looked forward to lovingly preparing well into her 91st year. No one entered her home without a pot of hot coffee and a plate of scrumptious delectables set before them. There was always an extra chair at her table for guests to join in her scrumptious repasts. Velva’s memory is cherished by siblings Vivian Bonli, Warren (Pat) Booker, Marilyn (Clarence) Rye, sister-in-law Dorothy Booker-Tymchatyn (Ed). She will be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends many of whom surrounded her during her last journey. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce, parents Amanda and Mike, mother and father-in-law Frank and Nellie Summerfeldt, siblings Maurine Summerfeldt, Irene Morgan, Marvin Booker, brothers-in-law Warren Summerfeldt, Alan Bonli, Ryrie Morgan, nephews Bradley and Cameron Booker, Jeff Bonli, niece Heather Smith-Risling. There is no one more deserving of a rest. There is a huge hole in our hearts and lives only to be filled with the many joyous memories of you. Thanks for all you’ve imparted to us. We’ll miss you forever. Special thanks to Dr. Graham and the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital and Dr. Ed Nykiforuk, her long time physician. A Private Family Service will be held. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (1738 Quebec Ave #26, Saskatoon, SK S7K 1V9) or to the Canadian Cancer Society (101 - 440 Second Ave. N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2C3) would be appreciated. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
