Bill is survived by his wife Teresa, his son Mike, his daughter Kelsey (Mick), step-children Danica (Jay), John, Carla (Lela), Joey (Vanessa) and Erica (Shane), and grandchildren Eli, Kole (Jen), Jazmine (Burke), Dana, Rachel, Amelia, Faith (Jacob), Ben, Monty, Fiona, Catie, and Tommy, and sister Timlen (Peter) and nephews Cory (Candace), Paul (Rachel), and Mark (Margot). He also leaves behind a wide community of extended family, close friends, colleagues and former students.
Bill was born in Regina on August 12th, 1946. A much-beloved child, he was never able to pass up the opportunity for fun or mischief, much to the chagrin of his parents and sisters. He attended school in Regina before being sent to St. Peter’s College at Muenster. Although his time with the priests didn’t quell his desire for fun, it did instill in him a deep faith that he carried through his life. He eventually returned to St. Pete’s as a board member to help support an institution that had supported him.
Bill’s ability to connect with others and his belief in a better Saskatchewan led him to a career with the Saskatchewan NDP. He served as MLA for Regina Rosemont for two terms, was party president for many years, and consulted for the federal NDP. His desire for a Saskatchewan where all people belong was also demonstrated in his work as a board member with Special Olympics.
After he lost his seat in 1982, Bill went back to school and received his education degree followed by a Master of Theology at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He taught at O’Neill, Riffel, and St. Jerome schools in Regina, before continuing his career in Prince Albert. He continued subbing until last year because of the enjoyment that being in the classroom provided him. He coached high school basketball for decades and instilled in his players that the character and determination that they built on the court would serve them throughout their lives.
During their retirements, Bill and Teresa travelled extensively and enjoyed their times with friends and family. Bill was a consummate host and delighted in the company of others. He loved a good story and good laugh and especially enjoyed a laugh at his own stories.
Bill’s great love was his family. He loved being a dad to Mike and Kelsey and was exceptionally proud of them. He will be lovingly remembered for his generosity, love for and acceptance of Teresa’s children and grandchildren. His ability to make people feel seen and welcome will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, please honour Bill’s memory through a donation to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation, a local food bank or shelter for the unhoused.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish (114 Kingsmere Pl, Saskatoon, SK).
