My dad lived a good life. He was a father, grandfather, recently became a great-grandfather, father in law, uncle, brother, and friend. He lived a good life. He would say this all the time – “I have a beautiful apartment, my life’s good and if I go today you know, I had a good life”. Said this all the time but more frequently these last few weeks. He loved his friends, he loved going to the Moose on Saturdays to dance- there was never a dance floor big enough for him, and he loved his country music.
He was raised in a loving family on Lennox Avenue, The Bears Jungle as we heard many times. Would talk stories upon stories about his childhood, his friends, the trouble he always got into and telling his jokes. He talked about his best friend growing up Donnie Watt, and how he would get them into trouble but Donnie was much bigger and would take everyone on for the both of them.
He always had a story to share at any given time. He always made people smile and laugh and he’s touched so many lives.
My dad married my mom in 1960 and they had 53 wonderful years together until she passed in 2013. She supported him throughout their lives together, and stood by him, sometimes not so quietly, with every crazy idea my dad ever wanted to pursue. And there were many.
My dad was also lucky to find love again with Kathy and my brother and I are thankful that he had this companionship these last years.
He had a good life. My dad was stubborn, he was kind, funny, was passionate about what he believed in, and loved his family. He would call John, his grandson Alex and myself many times a day just to chat about life, the Maple Leafs with Alex, tell another joke, needed help with something or just to see how we were. And I would give anything for just one more talk with him today.
He lived life on his own terms, with a larger than life personality, a heart of gold, making people laugh, making many friends along the way while tackling on yet another NOCMA event somewhere doing something! He was incredibly proud of what he created with country music. Three years ago we had a heartfelt conversation about trying to keep it going knowing his Alzheimer’s was affecting his life, and I just couldn’t say no. As most of you know, It was really, really hard to say no to my dad.
I would have done anything for my dad, and I know he knew that, and I miss him.
I loved my dad every single day, and now I will miss him every single day, as we all will. He was definitely one of a kind, no question. And my dad was loved by so many - for almost 83 years.
He left this world doing exactly what he loved most - listening to country music and dancing at the Moose with his best friend. How much more can anyone hope for?
He lived a good life to be sure. He was deeply loved. And he will be deeply missed, every single day.
