Loving husband of 59 years to Nicolene (nee Haggerty). Cherished father of Cathie Mackenzie (Barry) and Amy Shand (Kevin). Adoring Papa of Rianne Mackenzie, Nick Mackenzie, Davis Hoffman-St. John, and Kolton Shand. Predeceased by his parents Frederick Hoffman and Annie (nee Fitz), and by his siblings Marjorie, Laura, Dorothy, William, Albert, Marion, Evelyn, Vickie, Ted, Gloria and Ron. Survived by his brothers Gerald and Carman.
Gordon grew up on a farm in South River, Ontario, where hard work came naturally. He started young, logging and driving trucks, eventually making his way to Sault Ste. Marie. That’s where he and Nicolene raised their family and built a beautiful life together. He retired from Lajambe Forest Products in 1993 but wasn’t quite ready to slow down.
Gordon was an avid moose hunter and continued hunting into his 80s. He spent many hours in his woodworking shop building kitchen cupboards, tables, cradles, clocks, and anything else his family wanted.
Known for his strong work ethic, Gordon was a true “jack of all trades” and a natural problem solver. If something was broken, he was already planning how to fix it, ready with a solution, a joke, and a good story to match! He rarely sat still, always onto tackling the next ‘project’. If you spent time around him, you'd learn that there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix.
Gordon never hesitated to lend a hand, especially to those he loved. He believed in hard work and passed that down to us. He taught us to take pride in all we do, and to face challenges head-on. He wasn’t one for big declarations, he showed love by showing up. He was always there, quietly making sure everyone around him was taken care of. Gordon was all about family, making our lives easier brought him joy.
Some of our most cherished family memories were of summers spent camping: Dad behind the wheel, driving us across Canada from coast to coast. After retirement, he and Mom continued camping, with many trips to Florida, Texas, and Alaska. We will miss his special rib night dinners.
A graveside service at West Korah Cemetery will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 1:00 pm. Rev. Helen Smith officiating. All are welcome to drop by Gordon and Nicolene’s home at 32 Maki Rd from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Have a drink, share a story, and help us celebrate Gordon the way he would’ve wanted, surrounded by family, friends, and laughter.
