Loving daughter of Joe and Marie Gilmour, cherished sister of Paul and Philip, doting aunt to Sophie and Emma. Granddaughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Gilmour and the late Thomas and Annie Smith. She will be deeply missed by family in Canada, Northern Ireland, and Great Britain, her beloved cats Leonard and Ernesto, and countless friends and colleagues.
Born in Hythe, Hampshire, England, Karen moved to Canada at 3, and treasured summers at her favourite place, Goulais Bay. As a teen, she danced, volunteered at the Humane Society, and as a Candy Striper at Tendercare.
After graduating Bawating, Karen earned a Degree in Modern Literature, with honours at York University, before embarking on a dynamic career as an educator and journalist. Her work took her to India, South Korea, Mexico, Europe, and beyond. A brave adventurer, she immersed herself in cultures worldwide and returned with stories, laughter, and wisdom that enriched everyone around her. Most recently, she taught English at Centennial College, George Brown College and was preparing to begin teaching at Conestoga College this fall.
Karen will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp humor, and brilliant comebacks. Her students often remarked on her ‘aura’, a presence that drew people in. She leaves a legacy of advocacy and compassion, always standing with the underdog and offering a helping hand. To those who knew her, may you carry forward her love for animals, fearless spirit, and boundless curiosity.
Our heartfelt thanks to Goulais Fire and Sault Paramedics for their professional care, and to Emergency and ICU Staff at Sault Area Hospital, with special thanks to Dr. Landry and nurses Shelley, Stephanie, Robbie, and Stacy, for their kindness and compassion.
