Grandpa, we had many nights where we would talk till the wee hours of the morning. I have always been impressed with your life story and have told it to many of my friends. Your accomplishments were accented with the humility you carried over everything you have done. I only hope that in my life I am half the man you were.

Hi my name is John Hagan, I have been a Mine Rescue Officer for 23 years and I knew your Grandfather very well!  Please send along my condolences to your entire family on my behalf.  Ron actually trained me and 7 other team captains for the National Competition in 1986.  I had a great deal of respect for him, in fact he was very instrumental in my career choices.

I’m very sorry to hear about your Grandfather.  Ron and I worked together from 1977 until he retired in 1987 to take care of Gladys.  I knew both Ron and Gladys very well and then Minnie.  They are all great people and it was a pleasure knowing them.  It was a sad day for me when Ron retired.  He was actually the one that hired me and gave me my start with the government and mine rescue (I was 20 at the time and 33 three years later I am still involved with the organization and mine rescue).
We had been keeping in touch with Ron over the past years and kept him involved in the mine rescue world with the Mine Rescue Linkline (the last issue actually had quite an article on your grandfather).  I believe he truly enjoyed getting our newsletter and seeing the evolution of mine rescue past to mine rescue present and future.  Our current newsletter that was issued this week has mentioned the passing of Ron.  This newsletter goes worldwide to our contacts so I’m sure many people that knew Ron will see it and be saddened.

We have sent flowers to the funeral home and are truly sorry that we couldn’t be there, but I would appreciate it if you could also pass along our sincere condolences to the rest of the family.  We know Ron’s son Ron (your father probably?) quite well and would like to extend our condolences to him as well.

Though I only talked with Ron once by phone more than a year ago, I can tell you Ron is still well-remembered and highly respected among Ontario Mine Rescuers, and not just the older ones. By all accounts, Ron was an exceptional leader who played a significant role in changing attitudes toward mine safety and emergency preparedness.
