

SULLIVAN, Dr. William Eugene (January 18, 2014) - At Extendicare Maple View with family by his side. Predeceased by his wife, Isabel (nee McLarty). Survived by sons, Paul (Patty) and Patrick (Janet), grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, Eilish and Owen, and sister, Shirley Stables (Gord). Also survived by many nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews. Predeceased by parents, Marie and Owen Sullivan, step sisters, Margaret Campbell (nee Meers), Mary Thorp (nee Meers), and Rae Brandt (nee Marcella), and step brothers, Leonard, Cecil and Gerald Marcella. Bill, who was also known by family and friends as “Sully” or “Doc” grew up in his parents’ house on Albert St. East in Sault Ste. Marie. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Sault Technical and Commercial High School. After graduation, he worked as an Electrician’s Helper at Abitibi Paper until 1942, when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed as a Flight Sergeant and instructor of navigation at the British Commonwealth Air Training Program Base in Boundary Bay, British Columbia he met the love of his life, Isabel (“Is”) McLarty, who was posted to a small base hospital at Jericho Beach as a Sergeant in the Women’s Division of the RCAF. After the war ended, Bill attended “Rehab School” in Hamilton to upgrade his high school education. He then gained admission to Pre-Medicine at the University of Toronto. After graduation, and an internship at St. Michael’s Hospital, Bill and Isabel were married and returned to Sault Ste. Marie in 1954 to begin their life together and raise a family. The same year, Bill began his private practice in Family Medicine and served the people of Sault Ste. Marie in this capacity until the early 1980’s, when he accepted a job with the Ontario Government as Regional Coroner of North Eastern Ontario. Next, he worked as a physician at Algoma Steel’s medical clinic, before briefly returning to a small private practice in the early 1990’s. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home and Cremation Centre on Thursday, January 23, 2014 from 6-9 pm. Funeral service to be held in the chapel on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 11 am. Rev. Bruce McLeish officiating. Memorial contributions to Camp Quality or the Children’s Aid Society of Algoma would be greatly appreciated. The family would like to express special thanks to Lois White, who was Bill’s caregiver and guardian angel during the final years of his life.
