

John Larry Nelson passed away Friday, October 24, 2014, with family after a long illness. Mr. Nelson was born in Savannah, Georgia August 31, 1943 to Kirby Kimble Nelson, Sr. and Ollie Mock Nelson. He was a graduate of Herschel V. Jenkins High School in Savannah, Georgia. He served with the United States Marine Corp as a Sgt. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. John was a professional golfer and a member of the PGA with his work beginning at Bacon Park Golf Course as a caddie and retiring at Mary Calder Golf Course. He was a member of the Savannah Elks Lodge #183 since 1986 serving two terms as Exalted Ruler, Trustee, and worked with the Elks Scholarship Program both locally and state wide. He was an active member of the Isle of Hope Baptist Church. John was married to Joanne Radocy Nelson for 47 years who passed June 24, 2014. Survivors include daughter Audra Nelson Lofton of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren Caitlyn Eyre Lofton and Nelson Mayes Lofton; sister Almeta Cash of Savannah, Georgia; brother Gerald Nelson and wife Elaine of Guyton, Georgia along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Fairhaven Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel on Monday, October 27,, 2014 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Isle of Hope Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 beginning 11 a.m., graveside following at Elkins Family Cemetery with fellowship afterwards at the Elks Lodge #183.
