Oscar Garnto

He was born in Toomsboro, Georgia, and was preceded in death by his parents, Hoke Smith Garnto, Sr., and Nellie Pearl Freeman Garnto, and his stepmother, Lillie Mae Garnto, a brother, Horace Garnto, and a sister, Ella Mae Garnto.

He had formerly worked for Atlantic Ice Company, and then enlisted in the US Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.

He then went to work for the Central of Georgia Railroad as a Conductor, which merged with the Southern Railroad, and then the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was a member of the United Transportation Workers Union for 45 years.

He also worked for the City of Pooler, Georgia as a “Meter Reader”.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pooler, Georgia, and the Sam Elkins Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Connie Sue Brinson Garnto, Pooler, Ga; 2 sons, David Franklin Garnto, of Metter, Ga., and Lawrence S. Garnto, of Pooler, Ga; daughter, Cynthia D. Garnto (Jimmy Lewis) of Savannah, Ga; 3 brothers, Oliver Henry Garnto (Vonnie) of Locus Fort, Alabama; Wade Ira Garnto (Ann) of Marietta, Ga; and Larry Garnto (Wanda), of Ft. Valley, Ga; stepbrother, Joe Lowery (Pat), of Macon, Ga; 2 half brothers, Hoke Smith Garnto, Jr, of Macon, Ga., and Glenn Garnto (Susan) of Macon, Ga; 2 sisters, Sara G. Taylor, and Mildred Gilbert (Wayne), both of Macon, Ga; 2 grandchildren, Jessica Nicole Garnto and Tristen Dow Garnto; and 2 great grandchildren, Connor Caylor and Isabelle Marie Berry.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. at the Fairhaven Funeral Home – Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Ga 31406.

Funeral Services: 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Pooler, Ga., with Rev. Otis Hill, Rev. Loran Smith, and Rev. Frank Major officiating. Interment will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Garnto will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. to lie in state.
