Sondra Rose Houghtaling Peck, 72, died on October 24, 2014. She was born on December 3, 1941 in Baltimore, MD to the late E. Marjorie and Oscar L. Houghtaling of Horseheads, New York. Raised in Cortland, NY and Horseheads, NY, she was a graduate of Horseheads Central High School and the State University of New York in Cortland, where she studied elementary education.
On July 18, 1964 she married her high school sweetheart, David P. Peck, in Elmira, NY. The couple lived in Manchester, CT for four years, and moved to Savannah in 1969.
She enjoyed a long and fulfilling career educating young children, having taught at Manchester Green School in Manchester, CT, White Bluff Elementary School in Savannah, GA, and Savannah Country Day School. She celebrated her retirement from Savannah Country Day in 2005.
An active and dedicated member and Ruling Elder of White Bluff Presbyterian Church since 1969, she sang in the Chancel Choir, served as the Director of the Handbell Choir, and held many leadership positions in the church.
A dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, she was committed to living a useful, loving and Christian life, and did so with a joyful spirit. She maintained a warm and supportive home for her husband and children, and was always eager to welcome friends and strangers with her hospitality. She delighted in guiding her children into adulthood, welcomed her sons-in-law into her family, and celebrated the arrival of each grandchild. She particular enjoyed spending time with her three granddaughters.
After moving from the north to Savannah, she treated her church family like her real family. Her wide circle of friends knew her for her ready smile and gentle humor, and she shared her enthusiasm for travel, family gatherings, and great meals. Later in life she took loving care of her aged mother, and cultivated long-term friendships, some of which extended six decades. She was a devoted friend to her co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances near and far. A responsible citizen, she was civic-minded and interested in her community, and to her last day she was willing to give of her time and talent for the good of others.
Surviving are her loving husband of 50 years David P. Peck; her brother John L. Houghtaling (Laura); two daughters, Jennifer L. Ennis (Daniel) and Cindy P. Garris (Steven); three grandchildren, Katherine R. Ennis, Caroline C. Ennis, and Lauren M. Garris; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 30 at 11am at White Bluff Presbyterian Church, with interment to follow in the church’s Memory Garden. A visitation and reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Living Fund of White Bluff Presbyterian Church.
