I have wonderful memories of Mrs Lum taking my brother and me to Broadlands park around the corner, for a swim in the Broadlands outdoor pool on a hot summer day, and to drop by to say hello to her many friends at the tennis club.  She always had many friends!

Mrs Lum was a great babysitter. If you asked her to play dress up, she would agree with a big smile!  She would watch The Price is Right and Family Feud with us -- she made it so much fun by guessing the answers with us.   Her basement TV rec room was also a fun place to go.  You could sit in the giant Lazy-Boy and watch TV, or you could read the hardcover Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys detective stories that she had there.  That was where I first discovered them.  She had the whole collection, and eventually I read all of them!  We also loved playing cards with her.

Mrs Lum would make us lunch or a snack in her kitchen.  She showed me how to make one of my favourite foods to this day -- a cheese omelette!  Mr Lum would always be sitting at the table nearby,  examining his stamp collection with a magnifying glass. He loved to pull our leg!  First, he would look up at us from his stamps, and make a very stern and serious face.  My brother and I would get scared that we had disturbed him and that he was going to get very angry!  Then his face would suddenly transform into a giant mischievous grin, and he would laugh and crack lots of jokes!  He was very good at that trick.  Mrs Lum would always remind him not to tease us too much!

Over the years, it has been my honour to have been invited to, and to have attended, so many of the milestones in Mrs Lum's life, including her 50th wedding anniversary, her 85th birthday, and her son and daughter-in-law's annual barbeques.

Though I am sad that Mrs Lum has left us, she will always live on in those whose lives she touched, such as mine and that of my brother, with her kind and gentle spirit.

In 1976 in NZ I married Betty Lum's favorite nephew Freddie Houng-Lee (well one of many favorites I have now learned ).From that year on we received a Christmas card annually. always the first of the season to arrive. It was full of family news and photos but it was over a decade before I finally met the sender Auntie Betty. She was so warm and friendly that I instantly felt a deep and lasting family connection.
In 2000 she came came to NZ with Rose, Tom and kids to see the first sunrise of the new millennium. Her brother Robert refused to drive 5 hours to the big smoke ( Auckland ) so 13 of us loaded into 3 cars and drove to Whakatane. We all camped out in his house, on the floor and kids in the outhouse . Boy - Houng-Lees are good sleepers and great snorers . Had lots of eating and card playing of course . 
2006 - 18 Canadian and Kiwis went on a 3 week whirlwind tour of China that went east to west and north and south . Betty and my mum Lena ( and 2 wheelchairs )kept pace with us younguns and first up at breakfast . Remember we corrupted our Chinese guide Larry introducing him to alcohol and cards . That trip was a laugh a minute everyday . 
2008/09 Betty instigated the Arthur Houng-Lee family reunion in Fiji. 3 generations under the same roof and the 5th generation of Houng-Lee children meeting for the first time.It was wonderful . 
Auntie Betty - many family and friends have spoken of your exploits and travels , your love and kindness and zest for life.  What great memories we all have to remember you by and always with a smile .

My Po Po was such a cheeky woman.  Her love of food was one of her most memorable characteristics. She was such an amazing cook and I especially loved it when she made traditional chinese food. My favourite was "glass noodles". 
 
I remember at Auntie Choonie's wedding each table had a bowl of seafood for the table to share.  when Po Po's table had finished theirs, she went around to all the other tables to see if they had any left! 

I remember her loving to play tennis before her knees got bad. When we were staying over at her house, she would wake us up early and we'd eat our cornflakes and blueberries at the tennis court while she played. 

She hated frogs and troll dolls so we tried do show her as any of those as we could. 

Po Po loved to play cards. I think she was the first person who taught me how to play cards. We'd play for hours on at her kitchen table to pass the time. I've taught my kids to play all the games she taught us and it is one of our favourite family pass times. 

She was such a fun, kind, sweet, caring and loving grandmother. I'm sorry I didn't get to see her much after moving to Australia.  She was the centre of our family and brought everyone together. 

I'm so glad you were able to meet your great grandsons. They call you "big popo", since Ocean is Po Po to them. 

I miss you Po Po and I'll cherish my memories of you forever.

What I remember most about my Po Po was her love of food, cards and sports, especially WWE. I'm starting to realize that's where my love of sports comes from.  One of my most vivid memories is watching WWE's king of the ring with all of the cousin's. My 6 year old self thought it was absolutely the coolest thing, watching wresting with my Po Po. 

Another area where I've taken after Po Po was love of food and her refusal to waste it. As a youngster, I remember being terrified to leave the dinner table with food on my plate, knowing I would be chastised by Po Po. I know now what a valuable lesson I learned, given the current issues with food waste and disposable/ single use culture.

Thank you for all you've taught me. I love you and will miss you.

Aunt Betty,
 You have always been a wonderful and supportive aunt whenever our lives crossed.  I’m sorry that we lived so far apart because I know we would have been even closer.  I loved listening about the things you were doing in your life – going to Fiji to visit family, playing tennis in your senior years, and travelling.  I’m so glad that you were able to join us on our family cruise to Alaska.  It is another special memory for me.  You were always so accommodating whenever Elaine and I were stuck in Toronto from being on standby and we had to call you to put us up for the night.  You always welcomed us with open arms.  I miss you dearly and you will always have a special place in my heart.

When I think of Betty Lum I remember two things - food and fun. She was a legendary cook and always quick to laugh. This made visiting her and Stan, or PoPo and GungGung, as they became to Chloe and Spirit, always a delight for me. Heaven is a happier place with Betty Lum's presence. My deepest condolences to her surviving family and friends. May she rest in eternal and everlasting peace.

Your mother, Betty and late father, Stan (Sr) were the first to ever invite me (a stranger) into their home for dinner and to introduce me to you and your sisters! My most heartfelt condolences to the Lum family for the loss of their mother, Betty Lum.  I am so sorry for your loss.   It is so hard to believe the years that have gone by.   Your Mom was a beautiful person.  My most memorable memory of your mother was passing by your  home on my way home late afternoon, your Mom BBQing in the front of your home, surrounded by children from the neighbourhood. Heartfelt sympathy to the entire Lum family. For years Betty was a dear friend to my parents Stan and Elizabeth Sobolewski.  They played bid euchre together at each other's homes or at the Broadlands Community Centre sharing many jokes and much laughter. They attended each other's birthday celebrations sharing  cuisine from Poland to the Philippines.  In time Betty's  family became intrinsically linked with my family helping each other out as our parents aged. I had never heard Betty say anything negative about anyone or anything.  I will always remember her for her gentleness and kindness. Rest in Peace, Betty. And now go shuffle those cards! My parents have been waiting for you.
