January 7, 1934 - December 14, 2023
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Papa, Jose Buan Jr. on December 14, 2023. He spent many years bravely battling cancer, overcoming arthritis/stenosis with spinal surgery. With his loving wife and dedicated children, who cared for him at every step, he lived life to the fullest, in both California and Toronto. He took his last breath peacefully, surrounded by love, in the beautiful family home created by Pepito and his loving wife, Gloria, in Torrance, California.
Born in Moncada, Tarlac Philippines to Jose Buan Sr. and Demetria Alcid, Jose grew up in Philippines. He graduated and worked as a Senior Geodetic Engineer, a surveyor when his best friend, Pedro Mendoza started working with him. They both resigned in May 1974 to accept a position for aerial mapping in the newly independent country of Papua New Guinea (PNG). We are proud to know our Papa, along with his friends, played a unique role in PNG’s history as “the first batch” of technicians, professors, architects and surveyors brought in by the government to work in Port Moresby. Jose worked as a surveyor with his friend for many years on this beautiful “untouched” island.
These expats became his Chit Chat family, spent the birthdays and Christmas celebrations together, with endless laughter and unimaginable joy. In time, the families went their separate ways and Jose relocated again to Toronto, Canada where he would join his parents, brother and sister, and give his youngest two children higher education.
Jose is survived by his dedicated loving wife of 66 years, Zenaida, and his loving children: Joe Buan III (Pepito), Ana Jenafer, Ferdinand and Darlene. Jose loved his children-in-law as his own, and treated them with the same love and support and they did him: Gloria, William, Jean, Fil. He loved each and every one of his grandchildren: Joseph and Joshua, Rowan and Marika, Alexandra and Mathieu, Amelia. He is honoured to be the great grandfather to Kassandra and Jameson.
He is survived by his siblings Antonio, Victoria, Phil, Ogie, and Alan.
Although we will miss our Papa’s presence in our lives, Jose’s devotion and deep love for his family is eternal
