Giovanni G. Vairo was born on October 11, 1944 to Giuseppe and Elvira Vairo in Carolei, Calabria, Italy. He has passed away on December 24, 2022 surrounded by his entire family in his new home in Savannah, Georgia. Giovanni and his surviving wife, Marisa, emigrated to the United States in 1970 to build a family and seek out the American Dream. Giovanni embarked on a successful career that he started in his hometown in Italy, then cultivated alongside his cousin and mentor, Nat Greco at Unique Hair Studio as a traditional barber and hairstylists. He then added hair replacement to his resume of talents and worked at the iconic Mr. Carmine's on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers, New York alongside his longtime professional partner and life-long friend, Carmine Pisacreta. His dynamic working relationship with Carmine and his craft in hair replacement is forever documented in the 2012 documentary entitled Mansome, a film about the cultural habits of male grooming.
Giovanni is survived by his wife and three children, Vera, Joseph and John Jr. Giovanni was well known as a man of faith and a devout Catholic who served as an usher at his parish, Our Lady of Fatima. He also became a Eucharistic minister and gave Eucharist to the elderly at nursing homes across Westchester County. Giovanni was a proud Italian who got involved in his hometown heritage group, Figli di Carolei and worked to raise money, Pride and cultural awareness of his beloved hometown. He became president of this group while simultaneously becoming a member of the Holy Name Society, further solidifying his faith in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Giovanni was a social man who befriended everyone he met. He could make anyone drop their guard and laugh with his charisma; hilarious sense of humor and magnetic nature, all while dressed impeccably in a three-piece suit. He is survived by his only sister, Philomena and an entire extended family who have adored him his entire life.
