Mrs. Jung, affectionately known as PoPo (“Grandmother”), was born in Canton, China, the youngest of four children. After her father and brother died, Anna moved to Kobe, Japan, with her mother to live with her oldest brother and his family. Anna became responsible for supporting the family when her brother, who had been conscripted to work in a factory during World War II, was killed when the factory was bombed. When the war ended, she met her husband, John, a U.S. Army soldier stationed in Japan, and was brought to the U.S. as a war bride.
After the war, John and Anna operated a Chinese laundry in Far Rockaway, New York, where Mary, George and Henry were born. In the mid 1950s, they moved to Macao, China, where Sally and Lily were born. In 1967, the family returned to New York, where Anna worked as a seamstress in New York’s Chinatown. After they retired, John had a devastating stroke and was cared for by Anna for the final 10 years of his life. She also helped raise all her grandchildren in New Jersey and Washington. She loved to eat dim sum, travel, and play mahjong. She was a prolific knitter and crocheter, single-handedly depleting the yarn supply in Seattle. Everyone who met her received a handmade cap and scarf. While she was known for her compassion and generosity, she had a mischievous side as well.
Anna is survived by her four loving children and their spouses: Mary and Steven Eng (FL), Henry and Jeanette Jung (FL), Sally and John Cheong (FL), and Lily and John Henson (GA). She also leaves behind nine adoring grandchildren and their spouses: Michael Jung (NJ), Samuel and Melanie B. Eng (NJ), Larry and Johanna Cheong (CA), Bruce and Kate Cheong (VA), Sarah and Matthew Zucarelli (VA), Andrew Jung (FL), Derek Eng (WA), Lauren and Brendan Weber (WA) and Melanie Eng (FL).
She is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, John Jung, and her son, George, who died at birth.
A funeral service is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday, June 20, at Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home (824 Scarsdale Avenue, Scarsdale, New York), followed by the burial at 11 a.m. at Kensico Cemetery (273 Lakeview Avenue, Valhalla, NY), where she will join her beloved husband, John.
