After a long illness, Hannah Toby Scomillio (Lewin) passed away peacefully at home on July 7, 2021, with her husband James V. Scomillio by her side. Hannah was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Henry and Eve Lewin, who predeceased her. She will be greatly missed by her children Philip (Janet) Gottlieb, Sharon Amoruso (Gottlieb), and William Gottlieb; her beloved grandchildren Alex Gottlieb, Megan Gottlieb, and Maggie Amoruso; her sister Sara (Harvey) Hurwitz of Plattsburgh, NY, and her brother Robert (Donna) of Andover, MA; and her husband’s children, whom she treated as her own, Carol (Anthony) Pinto, Susan Scomillio, and their children Alexa (Caleb) Johnson, and Sara and Sydney Schaeffer.
Hannah was known for her striking work ethic, which started young, when she excelled in high school and went on to graduate from Simmons College at age 20. She worked a variety of positions, including as a teacher, an executive assistant, a waitress, and a support person for individuals with special needs attending Iona College. Hannah’s spirit both calmed and inspired individuals, and she was welcomed and valued wherever she went.
As well as being a teacher, Hannah was a student of life. Fascinated by the world around her, she loved to immerse herself in culture, travel, current event discussions, and Broadway plays followed by drinks and dinner. She was an ardent Yankees fan despite her Boston heritage. And always, always present in Hannah’s life was family. She celebrated every occasion with a cake and attended every little league game, marching band competition, school event, dance and gymnastics recital, and family gathering, always entering with her trademark “Look Who’s Here!”
Hannah found her big love with Jim, and they lived a life together for 28 years that she made wonderful, not just for herself but for everyone around her. From her pot roast to her poppyseed cakes to her life stories to her lively discussions, Hannah created memories for many people that will live on forever. While there will be no funeral service, the family will have a celebration of Hannah’s life in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
