Born on June 18, 1920, in Brooklyn New York, Helen was daughter of the late Frederick C. Wood, Sr. and Helen M. Wood. A talented artist, and musician of the piano and organ, she attended Manhattanville College. After serving in the Navy during WWII, Helen began her secretarial career in 1946 at American Celanese in New York City.
In 1959, she moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she began work with The Ft. Lauderdale News. With a talent in finance, she became the personal secretary of Robert H. Gore, Sr. and continued to serve as such until his death in 1972. She continued to work with the Gore Foundation in the following years until her retirement.
Her devout dedication to her faith continued throughout her life. In her final years, Helen enjoyed the company of friends, reading, and the entertainment of classic films from the 30's and 40's. Her love of her friends, of the arts, and of the Fort Lauderdale coast followed her throughout her life.
Helen is predeceased by her sister, Virginia M. Wood, North Hatley, Canada. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Frederick C. Wood, Jr. (Frances), of Loudonville, New York and three nieces: Carol Campbell, of Toronto, Canada, Anne Brown -Bradley, of North Hatley, Canada, Mary Lynn Vierling (Arthur), of Syracuse, New York, and three nephews: Robert Brown (Shirley), of North Hatley, Canada, Thomas Wood, of Buffalo, New York, and Robert Wood, of Rhinebeck, New York, as well as four grand-nieces and four grand-nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. on Monday July 7th 2014 time pending
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to the American Alzheimer's Association, and Saint Coleman's Catholic Church, Pompano Beach, Florida.
