Joe was a stellar athlete, who excelled at basketball, baseball and track and field. He played on Fairfield University’s first basketball team and was the first player in Fairfield history to score 1,000 points and was elected to Fairfield’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. There is a banner hanging in his honor in their gymnasium.
An avid golfer, he was a member of the Ridgefield, CT. Senior Golf Club for 25 years along with his brother Jim. He enjoyed the competition and assisted with recording the weekly scores to determine the end of the season awards. He enjoyed the camaraderie as much as the competition and valued his many friendships within the club.
He was a committed spectator who could always be found intensely watching his children and grandchildren compete while taking notes on their performances to share with them later. No sporting event was too far to journey to in order to cheer on his family. He was certainly their biggest and most vocal fan.
In addition to his sporting interests, he was a devoted parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale, N.Y. and also volunteered as Treasurer for the Scarsdale Congregational Church where his wife Joan is a member.
As a teenager, Joe met his future wife, Joan Gordon, at a baseball game in Woodlawn. After a one-week engagement, Joe and Joan were married. He left soon thereafter to serve his country.
He served as a Private First Class for the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and was a member of an Army basketball team that competed against other units throughout Europe.
