Mary was a native of Toronto, Ontario, and a graduate of the University of Toronto. In 1948, she married Hans Kern in Wyevale, Ontario. In 1952, they came to Eastchester, where they raised two sons. Later, Mary earned a library degree from Columbia University and became a reference librarian at the Mount Vernon Public Library.
She had a keen interest in current affairs and was an active member of the churches she attended, most recently Zion Episcopal in Dobbs Ferry. She pursued a wide range of theological studies.
She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by son John and his wife, Jane, of Eastchester; son Jim and his wife, Kim, and their children, Tori and Jack, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and her gentle cat, Priscilla.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Fountains for their care and kindness.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, 824 Scarsdale Ave., Scarsdale.
