

Ed was the husband of Mary Lou (Clancy) McCann. They had been married for 47 years. He was the father of Edward McCann, III of Milton, Christopher McCann and his wife Laura Kopfinger of La Jolla, CA and John McCann and his wife Heather of Cohasset, and the grandfather of Kathryn McCann. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Ed was born and raised in North Cambridge, MA, son of Edward and Mabel McCann and brother of the late Virginia O’Connor. He received a bachelor’s degree from Salem State College and a master’s degree from Northeastern University. Ed has been a Scituate resident since 1973.
Ed began his career as a junior high school teacher in Woburn. The majority of his career was in public administration for state/local government. His public administration experience included Town Manager roles in Holden and Scituate, interim Town Manager consulting for various Eastern Massachusetts’ towns, and several state government positions. Ed also served as the Executive Vice President of the Greater Boston and Massachusetts Hotel Association.
Throughout his accomplished life and distinguished career, Ed proved himself able to conquer virtually any challenge encountered. He exhibited a strong sense of civic duty and pride. Ed volunteered significant personal time to various Town of Scituate activities, including the Scituate Library Foundation, the 350th Anniversary Celebration, the Housing Authority, the Council on Aging, and the Blizzard of ’78 disaster relief efforts.
Ed enjoyed quality time with his family and the everlasting memories resulting from such events as family weddings, reunions, vacations, or dinners at local restaurants.
Funeral from the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate on Saturday, January 8th at 9AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Nativity, Scituate at 10AM. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday, January 7th from 4PM - 8PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed’s memory to the Scituate Library Foundation, 85 Branch St., Scituate, MA 02066.
