She is the beloved wife of Chester, who predeceased her in 2010, and a happy 60 years of marriage. Gene is survived by four children, their spouses, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Gene was born in Athol, MA to William and Emogene (Mullins) Starrett, the youngest of five children, and sister to brothers Carlton, Clyde, David and Edwin. Gene graduated from Athol High School and attended her mother’s alma mater, North Adams State College for one year, and then transferred to attend Lasell College in Newton where she graduated in 1949. At Lasell, Gene was editor of the school newspaper and crew team captain, competing with other colleges on the Charles River. It was during this time that Gene met “Chet” at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and they were married on September 9, 1950.
After a short time in Wellesley, Gene and Chet moved to Medfield to their first home and where they had four children. In 1965 they moved to Scituate, having outgrown their small Cape, to a larger home, and to be close to the ocean so Chet could pursue his love of sailing. They built a vacation home at Eastman in Grantham, NH in 1978 where they entertained friends, and Gene learned to ski and play golf at the age of 50. There were travels to Bermuda and London where they stayed at the Savoy and frequented theater in the West End entertaining clients who became lifelong friends.
As children attended college and left home, Gene and Chet downsized to a one story condominium at 100 Pond Street in Cohasset where they continued to entertain, cook favorite meals, listen to jazz and show tunes and walk the beaches of Hull, Cohasset and Scituate for daily exercise. Winters were spent in Vero Beach, FL close to Gene’s youngest brother, Ed, and his wife, Ev. After Chet passed away in the fall of 2010, Gene moved to Proprietors Green in Marshfield in 2014 where she reconnected with Scituate acquaintances, made new friends and enjoyed “pub night” on Fridays. Children and grandchildren visited regularly along with great-grandchildren as the family continued to grow.
In 2019, Gene moved to Queen Anne’s Nursing Home where she was lovingly cared for by nurses, doctors and other attendants. She enjoyed a private room and was surrounded by family and friend photos and looked forward to her daily glass of wine and visits from children and grandchildren. Gene continued to carry on good conversation and maintain her sense of humor to the end.
Visiting hours omitted. Interment private. Donations may be made in Gene’s memory to the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate, MA 02066.
