STOUT, Gilbert M. of Scituate, MA passed away peacefully on May 31, 2011 at the age of 89. Raised in Hackettstown, NJ, the eldest child of Augusta (Martin) and John Gilbert Stout, he graduated Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ. Gilbert was also a graduate of Princeton University, Class of 1944, and attended New York University Law School before deciding to pursue a career in business management. He worked for over 40 years at the Prudential Insurance Company first in Newark, NJ, then Boston, MA as a General Manager. Upon retiring from Prudential, he dabbled in real estate sales when not on ‘the links’.
Gilbert was a WWII veteran having served in the Army Air Corps in the CBI Theater and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Upon his return from the service and completion of his bachelor’s degree, Gilbert married Marguerite Trimmer on October 5, 1946. They resided in Bloomfield, Florham Park and Chatham, NJ before relocating to Scituate.
While in Chatham, NJ, Gilbert served on the Board of Education and briefly taught high school history. He was a loyal congregant at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate, MA, further serving as Deacon and Trustee. An avid golfer and member of the Hatherly Golf Club in Scituate, he also enjoyed a fast-paced game of tennis, often delivering a lethal serve.
Whether father or friend, Gilbert will be remembered for his keen mind and love of history, loyalty to his friends, family and all New York sports teams, frequent political exhortations on the state of the union, and his ready sense of humor and rapier wit.
Gilbert was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite, on May 5th, as well as his siblings Bruce Carr Stout, Richard Sprague Stout and his wife Virginia. He is survived by sister-in-law Alice T. Stout, son Jeffrey G. Stout and his wife Christie of Scituate, daughter Sharyn E. Turner and her husband Ronald of Kernersville, NC, daughter Carol T. Stout and her husband Randall Gabrielan of Middletown, NJ, and grandson and newlywed Major Andrew Martin Turner and his wife, Kathleen.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Tuesday, June 14th at 11AM in the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, 381 Country Way, Scituate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gilbert’s memory to Homes For Our Troops or the Norwell VNA.
