Maria L. Fernandes, of Scituate, MA passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025 surrounded by family. Maria, or Bebe as she was known to many, was born on the Island of Brava, Cape Verde to Jose and Matilda Lopes on February 4, 1925. She moved to Scituate, MA in 1960 where she raised her family.
Bebe loved spending time with friends and family and was an avid gardener. She could grow or revive any plant. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, Gabrielle and Riley, and the children of others, acting like a second mother/grandmother. She loved watching Wheel of Fortune and Family Feud, but that paled in comparison to her love of wrestling. She loved watching wrestling 3 nights a week.
Most especially, Bebe loved cooking for friends and family, always asking “what do you want me to make for you” when they would visit. She will be missed for her beautiful smile, her laugh, her funny faces and how she would talk to anyone; she considered no one a stranger, not the person in Market Basket nor the person she didn’t know at Church.
BeBe is survived by her husband, Casimiro Fernandes of Scituate, MA; her two children; Phil Fernandes of Spotsylvania, Virginia; her daughter Susan (Germaine) and her husband Tim of Atlanta, GA. She leaves behind adoring grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family is so very grateful for the love, care, concern, and support provided to BeBe by all the staff at South Shore Hospital and LifeCare Center of America.
Visiting hours on April 30, 2025, from 3pm-7pm, at Richardson-Gaffney Funeral home on First Parish Road, Scituate, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday May 1, 2025, at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St, Scituate, MA at 10:00 AM.
