Marie was a truly a Cambridge girl, proud to be a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin. In Marie’s early years Marie lived and worked in Cambridge. We grew up in the same neighborhood in the shadow of Harvard Square.
A chance encounter with Marie in the main hallway of 77 Massachusetts Avenue at MIT on June 18, 1969, was the beginning of our 51 year romance. We settled in Scituate in 1978.
Marie went on to have a remarkable career of 42 years at MIT, and continued to be involved after her semi retirement a few years ago. Marie maintained close contact with the ladies from her office right up until her passing. While Marie was at Massachusetts General Hospital fighting Covid, everyone was texting funny notes and words of encouragement.
Highlights of Marie’s life at MIT included the Dalai Lama, who took her arm at an event at MIT in 2009 and promised her that “you are going to heaven”.
In 1994 the movie Blown Away was filmed at MIT. Marie and everyone in her department was involved, presenting Jeff Bridges with an MIT jacket when filming wrapped.
In 1998 President Bill Clinton was the commencement speaker at MIT. Marie always remembered that the Secret Service jammed everyone’s cell phones and brought bomb sniffing dogs into her office.
During her career Marie was honored as one of nine significant woman at MIT.
Marie leaves her loving soulmate of 51 years, Dennis Lane, her sisters Kathleen and Terry, and many many nieces and nephews. Marie maintained friendships back to her schoolgirl days in Cambridge. That was Marie. Her smile was amazing and her heart embraced everyone who knew her.
Several years ago, we were in Prague and on a river cruise and there was a young woman named Katie traveling alone. We had formed a group of friends on the trip, invited Katie to hang out with us. Since then Katie has become our adopted Granddaughter, visiting us in Boston and traveling with Marie and I to Iceland. The trip of a lifetime. Marie and Katie had an amazing bond.
Marie was proud of her cultural heritage, Narragansett American Indian, Slovakian, African American and Portuguese.
I have a hole in my heart. I miss my girl and will remember her always.
