SCITUATE Mildred Anne (O’Keefe) Sisk, 92, of Scituate passed away peacefully after a brief stay at the NVNA Hospice House in Hingham on January 15, 2017. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Maryanne and Dan Irish of Hooksett, NH, and son Raymond W. (Bill) Sisk, Jr. of Tucson, AZ.
Mildred grew up in Somerville. She was predeceased by her parents John J. O’Keefe and Mildred J. (Coakley) O’Keefe, and her baby brother Robert O’Keefe, and her husband Raymond W. Sisk. She graduated from Somerville High School and completed a secretarial course at Oxford Business School.
On November 28, 1942, Mildred had plans to go with friends to the Coconut Grove in Boston after the BC/Holy Cross football game at Fenway Park, to meet up with boys from the BC Band, including Ray. Due to BC’s stunning loss, the celebration scheduled for the Grove dispersed to other Boston venues. That night almost 500, mostly young people, tragically lost their life in the worst fire in Boston’s history.
Before marrying Ray in 1949, Mildred worked as a bookkeeper with the IRS in Boston. When Ray was called back into the Marine Corps in the early 50s, she trained as a Gray Lady with the Red Cross while they were stationed in Florida.
Ray and Mildred moved to Scituate in 1957, where they adopted Maryanne and Bill over the next few years. Mildred was active in several organizations at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, including Ladies’ Sodality and teaching CCD. She volunteered with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, and later the Music and Athletic Boosters at Scituate High. Mildred took courses at Bridgewater State and worked as an aide in the Scituate Schools.
She enjoyed preparing sandwiches for the Pine Street Inn in Boston and assisting Ray with his St. Vincent de Paul work. They loved spending time with friends and family, and played in monthly bridge groups. In retirement they were active in the “9-Holers” at Scituate Country Club, and spent many winters in Stuart, FL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary of the Nativity in Scituate Harbor on Saturday, January 21 at 10 AM. It will be followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, and a reception at the Parish Center. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend any or all of these celebrations of Mildred’s life.
Arrangements will be handled by the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mildred A, Sisk to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent St., Scituate, MA 02066 or to Pine Street Inn, 444 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118.
