

He was born and raised in Brookline and Brighton, and graduated early from Brighton High School so that he could volunteer at age 16 for the United States Marine Corps. Holding the rank of Corporal, Dick was attached to the First Pioneer Battalion of the First Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. After WW2, he was stationed in northern China and Manchuria, where he was wounded by Communist forces during the war between the Communist and Nationalist Chinese. Upon honorable discharge he returned to the United States and began a career working for the New York Central Railroad and its corporate successors until his retirement in 1988.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary Patricia “Pat” Bowen of Brighton, whom he married in 1956. They bought a home in the Minot section of Scituate where they lived ever since.
He is the beloved father of five children, Richard Bowen of Scituate, Kathleen Anderson of North Attleboro, Carol Bowen of Manhattan, Paul Bowen of Newton, and the late Mark Bowen. He is the proud grandfather of six. He is also survived by his sister Agnes “Loretta” McGrath.
In addition he authored several published children’s books and was an accomplished oil painter. He and Pat were members of the St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Parish choir in Scituate for twenty five years. He was an avid historian of American History and Twentieth Century world history, and an acknowledged expert on the “Peking Man” archeological mystery.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday August 25th at 10AM in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate with burial at the new Saint Mary’s cemetery in Scituate.
In lieu of flowers Dick Bowen has requested that people go out to dinner with their families for a pleasant evening’s fun.
