She was the daughter of the late Marten J. and Selma F. Meyer, and the adoring grandmother of the late Amy Beth Lanzikos who predeceased her in 1978 – a loss beyond words.
Sally was the devoted mother of her two children, son J. Elliott Thomas, Jr. and wife Vicky of Yarmouth, Maine and daughter Sally F. Lanzikos Pineau and husband Dan of Hanover, MA. She is also survived by her sister Jeanne M. Bird of South Dartmouth, MA, niece Rachel Bird Anderson and nephews Marten F. and Matthew G. Bird and several “Thomas” nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her “grandchildren of the heart,” Alana and Justin Kapust and many good friends, especially Patti and Dan Gillespie of Chicago, Maureen Holland and her late husband Jimmy of Marshfield and Roger and Judy Kent of Humarock and Florida.
Sally and John had begun “summering” in Humarock in 1952 and became year-round residents in 1976. While Sally had enjoyed being a stay at home mother, when her children were grown, she actively pursued her hobbies as an award winning (North River Arts Society) photographer, with 2 of her photos chosen as cover photos for the Cohasset/Scituate phone book. She also took pride in her knitting and sewing and “ribbon winning” window boxes at the Marshfield Fair year after year. In addition, she enjoyed being “Warden” at the polls in Scituate: something she had done for years before.
Sally and John were definitely a team. They were instrumental in initiating the Scituate Luminaria, very involved in Scituate Community Christmas and were on different town committees throughout the years. They were the first couple chosen as “Citizens of the Year.” They were faithful communicants at their parish, St. Christine’s in Marshfield, where they volunteered on different projects.
Twice a year, Sally and John travelled together in their motor home across the country, exploring all 48 contiguous states and parts of Canada, with Sally taking literally thousands of pictures through the years – so many wonderful stories and memories.
Sally was young at heart and enjoyed life to the fullest. She always said that her children came first and for this, Elliott and I are grateful. Our parents’ love for each other and for us is truly the gift of our lives. Mum will be greatly missed, but forever in our hearts.
