

McDermott-Stephen G. Sr. of Hingham, formerly of Scituate, passed on June 27th, 2011 at Life Care Center, Scituate after a lengthy illness, age 75. Loving husband of Joanne (Richardson). Born in Boston, Stephen was raised in Jamaica Plain and Brookline, spent 41 years in Scituate, and moved to Hingham 7 years ago. He is a Navy Korean War Veteran, and Army National Guard Reservist. Mr. McDermott was a school teacher for over 30 years in Boston, and several surrounding towns. After retiring, he worked for FEMA for 5 years, and then became a substance abuse counselor for High Point in Brockton. Stephen was a dedicated football, baseball, and basketball coach for many years. He was a well loved Camp Counselor at Meadowcroft Day Camp In Norwell for several years, a former member of Knights of Columbus, D.A.V., and Friend of Bill for 23 years. Devoted father of Stephen Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Waltham, Sheila Delaney and her husband Colin of Old Saybrook CT, John of CA, Christopher and his wife Amy of Squantum, and Erin Servaes of Weymouth. Brother of Martha Gaeta of E. Boston, Kevin of Quincy, and the late Brian McDermott. Cherished grandfather of Devin and Meghan Delaney, Sean and Brigid McDermott, and Caleigh and Aislinn Servaes. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd, Scituate on Friday, July 1st at 9AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, Scituate at 10AM. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 30th from 4-8PM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations in Stephen’s memory be made to the charity of choice.
