

Alice O’Nella “Nell” Grassmick, 92, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, April 22, 2007 at the Golden Living Center-Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor James Green officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Nell was born July 4, 1914 on a homestead in Old Canton, Nebraska to William Houston and Elizabeth (Reid) Fincher. They moved to a farm outside of Minatare, NE where she lived until she was ten years old after which the family moved to Gering. She earned the rest of her schooling in the Gering schools. Nell married Matthew Charles Head in 1933 in Gering. She and Charles moved back to the Minatare farm where they lived until 1946 at which time they moved to her present address in Scottsbluff. During WW II, Nell became the first woman ditch rider for the Pathfinder Irrigation District. She was the furniture manager for Gambles of Scottsbluff for 22 years. She retired from there to care for Charles from 1969-1973. After Charles died in 1973, she served as office assistant for Dr. Daniel Keller of Scottsbluff. In October 1980 and after retirement she married John Grassmick, Jr. of Gering. They resided in Scottsbluff until his death in April, 1998. Nell was a member of Hope Project Club of Minatare and the First Baptist Church of Scottsbluff. She was a member of several philanthropic organizations and served as President of both the WW I Women’s Auxiliary and Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She is survived by a daughter Cora Alice Baldwin of Zepherhills, FL; granddaughter: Debbie Arrington and her husband Gabe of Bethesda, MD; grandson: Tommy Baldwin and his wife Brenda of Eldersburg, MD; two great grandsons: Justin and Matthew Arrington, Bethesda, MD, nephew and his spouse Walter and Deleina Fincher of Minatare, NE; stepdaughter and spouse Mona and John Gardner of Littleton, CO; one step granddaughter Stacia Boley of Thornton, CO; sister-in-law: Dee Fincher of Cheyenne, WY, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, husband John, three brothers Walter, Lacey and John Fincher, and two sisters-in-law: Edith and Marie Fincher Wheeler.
